Olive & Annie is dedicated to empowering Maasai artisans in Kenya as they work toward reaching financial independence. It is a branch of the charitable organization She Matters, which is a community of resilient survivors and advocates who are united against sexual violence.
The organization supports women, many of whom have experienced hardships. Through Olive & Annie, talented artisans have access to essential resources, including educational opportunities, community development workshops, and health programs. Olive & Annie takes comprehensive steps to oppose sexual violence by funding photography campaigns dedicated to empowering survivors and helping guide She Matters in hiring a full-time social worker to provide professional counseling. With ZLT Hope Homes, a safe house for children, Olive & Annie has funded rent expenses, provided more than 12,000 nutritious meals, and paid for more than 50 education scholarships.
Artisans working with Olive & Annie use ethically sourced materials while practicing intricate techniques. In a Nairobi-based workshop, they practice a leatherworking technique. The moccasin production was the first of its kind for this group, and they have mastered the skill with passion for their work. Each bootie is hand-cut and stitched using ethically sourced, chrome-free dyed leather from an internationally certified tannery in the town of Athi River. Leather craftsmanship is a traditional practice of Kenyan tribes across generations, and leather production continues to be a growing market. Olive & Annie’s designs are inspired by women’s rights, human rights, and ending sexual violence.
