India Kala
LOCATED IN india
India Kala, meaning ‘crafts of India’ in Hindi, is a social enterprise partnering with 850 artisans throughout India who are between the ages of 25 and 50. The artisans work with about 35 forms of craft from India. The artisans who have created these beautiful elephant mugs are based out of Pondicherry. Pondicherry was a French colonial settlement in India until 1954; it is now a Union Territory bounded by the southeastern Tamil Nadu state.
Many of the artisans previously worked with large manufacturers in the region. India Kala helps artisans reintegrate into ethical production cycles. Over the past two years, the artisans have successfully expanded their operation, installing a second kiln and employing 25 new artisans. The technique practiced is transmitted within families. As family members are introduced to the trade, the artisans ensure that the technique remains within the community.
India Kala works closely with the talented artisans while presenting opportunities for growth. For instance, they showcase the artisans’ work through marketing materials, perform quality checks and educate them about product quality standards, and ensure the artisans are providing marketable products without compromising on the traditional techniques practiced for the craft. Some of the artisans at India Kala work from home, and some work in the workshops. We love working with India Kala and the talented artisans who work hard to preserve beautiful crafts in India.
