Ajiri
LOCATED IN kenya
Social enterprise Ajiri collaborates with farmers to produce high-quality, delicious tea and coffee. The tea is hand-picked in Kisii, Kenya. Ajiri also employs talented artisan women, ranging from ages 25 to 80, to handcraft their recyclable packaging.
Women at Ajiri, many of whom are widows, work from home and enjoy the flexibility of taking care of their families while earning living wages and having access to essential resources including literacy workshops and health training. They can purchase land, livestock, and electricity for their houses. They improve their communities by digging wells, replacing thatched roofs with sturdy sheet metal, and sending both their sons and daughters to school for a quality education. Inspiringly, Ajiri expands its reach throughout Kenya by dedicating funds to sponsor the education of the country’s orphans.
Each box is completely recyclable, as are its contents — even the tea bags are biodegradable. The labels are made from once-dried paper, dried banana bark, and water hyacinth. Once your box runs out, the labels can easily be detached and repurposed as artwork, notecards, and beyond. Each tea bag is tied with twine made from dried banana leaves and decorated with brightly colored beads made from recycled magazine paper by artisan women.
