Tensira

LOCATED IN REPUBLIC OF GUINEA

Based in the Republic of Guinea, TENSIRA is dedicated to creating sustainable income opportunities for craft communities located in West Africa.

Each piece blends Nordic design with traditional West African techniques and handicrafts. TENSIRA supports more than 60 full-time artisan collaborators in Conakry and dozens of more independent craftspeople.

TENSIRA is named after a small village specialized in indigo dyeing. The talented artisan collaborators and craftspeople preserve indigo dyeing techniques; the blue dye is derived from the indigotier plant’s leaves found in Guinea. Each textile is hand-spun and handwoven on traditional looms with 100 percent cotton. For all tie-dye patterns, each stitch is sewn individually with a needle and thread. Nearly 3,600 ties are needed to create one meter of fabric.
