Naguska

LOCATED IN PERU

Founded in 1997, Naguska seeks to create sustainable income opportunities for artisans in Peru, increasingly for women knitters in rural areas in the highlands of Puno. These skilled artisan women can work from home while taking care of their families and household responsibilities. They have access to workshops, training, and technical support.

Artisans practice knitting and weaving techniques to create pieces including stuffed animals. To begin, a master weaver in charge of prototype development creates the first prototype. After any edits are made and samples are approved, the master weaver will share the pattern with artisans, who then sew the stuffed animals. They use a 100 percent Peruvian cotton thread and fill the stuffed animal with a synthetic polyester fiberfill. The local materials and techniques used to create products like these stuffed animals have been inherited across generations of artisans.
