Social enterprise Basha works with chronically underserved women and women who have survived human sex trafficking in Bangladesh by supporting dignified work and a chance to create a safer future.
The resilient artisan women complete a training and rehabilitation program before beginning work. They also have access to training programs, including in literacy and life skills, medical support, counseling, and day care for their children.
The kantha technique is a form of embroidery that has been practiced for centuries in rural communities of India and Bangladesh. The women at Basha creatively repurpose vintage saris and give them a new life in the form of a sustainable product. To create these one-of-a-kind quilts, they first cut the saris into small sections and then layer the pieces on top of each other before sewing and kantha stitching. They intricately ensure each stitch is consistent. Depending on the size and complexity of the piece, each blanket can take from two to 39 hours to complete. The final product is a one-of-a-kind textile with a meaningful story.
